Violin

Violinist MinJi Kim is a versatile solo violinist, chamber musician, and educator. Born in Seoul, South Korea, Kim began her training on the violin at age five. Based in Indianapolis, Indiana, Kim is an associate concertmaster of Carmel Symphony Orchestra, and regularly plays with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra. She was the former principal second violin of Lafayette Symphony Orchestra as The Esther & Richard Crowder Estate Chair.

As an educator, Kim is actively engaged in teaching her private students. She has taught music and the violin in various capacities since 2011 and now mainly has built her studio at Quattro String Academy in Carmel, IN and her own studio in downtown Indianapolis. Her students enjoyed their musical achievements such winning the concertmaster position at Indianapolis Youth Orchestra and leading positions at their school orchestras, playing with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra at the Side-by-Side Concert, and receiving acceptances to prestigious universities such as Yale. Kim was appointed as an Associate Instructor at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music to teach undergraduate and graduate, major and non-major students. Also, she was trained by renowned string pedagogue Mimi Zweig, and worked for the Fairview Violin Project under Dr. Brenner at Fairview Elementary School in Bloomington, IN. In South Korea, Kim holds a Teacher Certification in Music for Secondary School, issued by the Ministry of Education. She taught at Seoul Arts High School and Teach for Korea.

As a chamber musician, Kim enjoys collaborating with her colleagues. She joined the award-winning Delirium Musicum’s first album project “Seasons” on the Warner Classics label in April 2023. She was closely taught by Pacifica Quartet as a selected string quartet for three semesters at Indiana University. She has participated in numerous chamber music festival including Manchester Music Festival, VT, and Oregon Bach Festival, OR.

Kim is currently a candidate for the Doctoral of Music degree in Violin Literature and Performance with double minors in Baroque Violin and Music Theory at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where she also earned her Master of Music in 2018. Her final recital project was playing complete Ysaÿe sonatas, and her dissertation topic is on the forgotten Korean composer Sunnam Kim and his violin piece, Early Spring. She received her Bachelor of Music in Violin performance (Cum laude) from Seoul National University with a double major in Business Administration. Her principal teachers include Mark Kaplan, Stanley Ritchie, Kyungsun Lee, and Sunny Lee.
